Dr. Roger Greenwood Mark, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, physician, scientist, educator, mentor, and friend, passed away peacefully at home in Westwood, Mass. on July 14, 2026, at the age of 87.
Born to Jacob and Hazel Mark on June 4, 1939, Roger grew up alongside his three younger sisters, Beverly, Roberta and Daryl, in Brookline, Mass., where he developed an early curiosity in science, engineering, and the world around him—qualities that would shape a remarkable career dedicated to improving the care of patients through innovation and collaboration.
Roger married Dorothy "Dottie" MacKay at Newton Presbyterian Church on July 1, 1966, beginning a partnership that would span six decades, four children, eleven grandchildren, and many adventures around North America and the United Kingdom in sailboats, Chevy Suburbans and camper vans. The couple recently gathered with their family to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary, a milestone that reflected a life marked by enduring love, shared purpose, hospitality, and unwavering devotion to one another.
Roger and Dottie raised their four children, Elizabeth, Bryan, David and Robert, with a commitment to learning, service and family in Dover, Mass. Roger, an Eagle Scout in his youth, volunteered as a Scout leader with his sons in Troop 1. A baptized member of Cambridgeport Baptist Church, Roger then married and joined his wife at Newton Presbyterian Church, where his faith found expression through service, servant leadership, friendship, and community for more than forty years. Roger delighted in building things, repairing homes and automobiles, and introducing his family to the outdoors through hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, camping, and cross-country skiing. He found deep joy on Cape Cod where he and Dottie welcomed family, friends, students, and visitors to their summer cottage. Roger, known affectionately as “Papa,” shared his love of sailing with his grandchildren, teaching them to master the fundamentals of navigating his Sunfish and Mariner sailboats on countless voyages across the strong tides of Barnstable Bay.
Outside Massachusetts, Roger and Dottie traveled extensively, cultivating lifelong friendships spanning continents and cultures around the globe. Inspired by a lifelong interest in Native American history and culture, Roger drove his family across the country in the summer of 1982, arriving with a smoking Suburban engine at Crow Agency, Montana, where he volunteered as a physician. That experience began a deep relationship with the Crow community that has continued across three generations of the Mark family.
Professionally, Roger devoted his life to bridging medicine and engineering in ways that transformed the care of patients around the world. After graduating from MIT with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1960, he pursued both medicine and engineering, earning his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1965 and his PhD in electrical engineering from MIT in 1966. Following an internship with the Harvard Medical Service at Boston City Hospital, Roger served as a captain in the United States Air Force and medical officer at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico from 1967 to 1969. There he conducted research supporting a highly classified defense program, earning both the Air Force Research and Development Award and the Air Force Commendation Medal for his exceptional scientific contributions.
Upon returning to Boston, Roger joined the faculties of MIT and Harvard Medical School, where he spent more than four decades advancing the emerging field of biomedical engineering. He established one of the nation's earliest biomedical engineering laboratories within a teaching hospital and co-founded MIT's Biomedical Engineering Center for Clinical Instrumentation. His pioneering work in physiologic monitoring led to the development of one of the first bedside electrocardiographic monitors capable of automated arrhythmia detection, technology that became the foundation for modern intensive care monitoring systems.
Together with longtime collaborator George Moody, Roger co-created the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database, the international gold standard for annotated electrocardiographic recordings and the reference standard adopted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for evaluating computerized arrhythmia detection systems. Later, he founded MIT's Laboratory for Computational Physiology, where he led groundbreaking work in biomedical signal processing, computational physiology, and intelligent patient monitoring. His laboratory developed PhysioNet and later helped launch MIMIC, open-access repositories of physiologic data that revolutionized biomedical research by making carefully curated clinical datasets freely available to investigators around the world.
Roger believed that the greatest advances in healthcare came not from technology alone but from bringing people together across disciplines. As co-director of Harvard-MIT's Health Sciences and Technology program from 1985 to 1995, he helped guide the program through a pivotal period of growth, strengthening both its engineering and medical curricula while mentoring generations of physician-scientists. Throughout his career he emphasized openness, collaboration, and intellectual honesty. "We're not just interested in publishing," he once said. "We're interested in the truth." He also reminded students and colleagues that healthcare is "a complex human systems problem," insisting that technology should always serve people rather than replace them.
Roger's commitment to caring for vulnerable people extended far beyond the laboratory. He co-founded Urban Medical Group, one of Boston's earliest nonprofit geriatric primary care practices, pioneering interdisciplinary home-based care for frail and low income older adults throughout Massachusetts. His work integrating physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants into community-based care anticipated models that have since become standard practice. These experiences also inspired HST's "Real Medicine" course, introducing students to the challenges and rewards of caring for medically complex patients in their homes and communities.
Perhaps Roger's most enduring influence came through the people he mentored. Students, fellows, colleagues, and collaborators from around the world valued not only his extraordinary intellect but also his patience, humility, generosity, and genuine interest in helping others succeed. That spirit found its fullest expression when Roger and Dottie became the inaugural housemasters of Sidney-Pacific, MIT's graduate residence, from 2002 to 2013. Together they transformed the residence into a vibrant international community where students found friendship, guidance, hospitality, and a true sense of home. The traditions they established and the lives they touched continue to shape Sidney-Pacific to this day.
Although Roger faced significant health challenges in the final years of his life stemming from a combination of a peripheral neuropathy mixed with a form of dementia known as Limbic-predominant Age-related TDP-43 Encephalopathy (LATE) that limited his mobility and capacities – he was never known to complain. It was far more common to hear his words of deep gratitude for his life, faith, and family. He brightened in the presence of familiar faces and even cracked a joke or two. In his final months, he found comfort and dignity from a wonderful team of caregivers.
Roger will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments, but for his quiet wisdom, infectious curiosity, gentle humor, generous spirit, and steadfast belief that knowledge exists to serve humanity. He possessed the rare ability to make every person feel welcomed, valued, and capable of contributing something meaningful. His life demonstrated that excellence and kindness are not competing virtues but complementary ones. His legacy lives on in his family, in the generations of physicians and engineers he mentored, in the communities he helped build, and in the countless patients whose lives have been improved through the work he inspired.
Roger is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years, Dorothy; his three sisters and their families: Beverly (David) Kingston of Blacksburg, VA, Roberta (Roland) Zapp of Potomac, MD, Daryl Mark (the late David Nelson) of Wayland, MA, and brother-in-law Don (Ann) MacKay of Newton, MA; his four children: Elizabeth "Betsy" Boatwright (Marc) of Colorado Springs, CO; Bryan Mark (Suzann) of Columbus, OH; David Mark (Kristen) of Hardin, MT; and Robert Mark (Becky Evans) of Newton, MA; and his eleven beloved grandchildren: Thea (Andrew) Van Os, William Boatwright, Hannah Mark, Katie Boatwright, Nathan Mark, Caleb Mark, Iris Mark, Toby Mark, Emma Boatwright, Elizabeth “Libby” Mark, and Rowen Mark. Roger’s family was the great joy of his life, and he took deep pride in each of them. He also leaves behind countless colleagues, former students, neighbors, friends, and extended family around the world who were grateful to have known him.
